Christmas story shave gear

In addition to weaving a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan, the father in A Christmas Story shaved with Single Edged GEMs by the looks of it.

As for the brush and soap, I don’t know what they are.

“Keep innovating” they said…

…more like fiddling and breaking a well working, near perfect design I say – Keep It Simple Stupid and all that.

The 1904; Considered one of the highlights of early safety razors, originals still usable, still shaving great, spawned an untold number of copies, a myriad of different blades available.
The 1965 Techmatic; Considered one of the worst razors ever, can’t get replacement blades today, only lasting claim to fame is that it went to space.
The 2014 FlexBall; Apparently modern man has lost the ability to move his wrist, single source of (expensive) blades, moving parts will wear out, requires a battery, no significant improvement on other carts.

Design concept – roll up razor

Found this one online – if you want me really impressed, make it a DE.

Olden blades…

…simply looked better.

A different kind of sharp blade

A 2016 Special Edition handmade Taramundi knife from famed Spanish Artisan Pedro Bermudez – one of fifty made for my favourite shave forum; The Shave Nook.
Handmade stainless steel blade, stainless steel ferrule, laminated wood handle, hand sewn leather sheath. A work of craftmanship, and I’m pleased to own one of the fifty made.

Schick “Lady Eversharp” – first impressions

Short version; Nice shave.

Longer version; Why didn’t I try an injector before?

Well, I know why… I was too busy enjoying my DEs. But after I started to dabble in SEs, I decided to keep half an eye out for an injector. A few weeks ago a few NOS (New Old Stock) Schick razors came up for sale on my favourite shave forum, and after mulling it over for a short while I took the plunge.

Bright yellow and cheerful this time traveller from the 70’s is allegedly meant for a Lady, but I’m secure enough in my manliness to use whatever razor that comes to hand to hack of my beard… that, and the only real difference from a regular Schick is as far as I can tell the colour and shape of the handle.

I got delayed in trying it; first I had to wait for blades to arrive (I plan to keep the two vintage blades it came with, partly because I would hate to fall in love with a blade I can no longer get), then I had to get quite a bit of travelling for work out of the way. Since all indications is that injector blades lasts for more than a week, I want time to wear a blade out in one go without interruptions.

First shave was… remarkable unremarkable. About every other razor I’ve tried so far requires a little adjustment of angle, or some other adjustment… some have even been really nippy or downright angry. I assumed that like most SEs the Schick Lady Eversharp would be happiest if I placed the head flat against my skin, and it just worked. Simple as that.

The first shave with the Schick: Proraso blade, Brutalt Bra soap, Wilkinson Sword Badger brush, Myrsol Balsamica aftershave… and a Damn Fine Shave at the end of it all.

Bottom line? Try a Schick – it’s a good razor.

“Handy grip” for shaving stick

Wet Shaving Products Matterhorn Beard Oil – very quick review

A while back I received a small 1 oz bottle of beard oil from WSP.

There is not too much to say about it really; the oil work very well, the smell is pleasant but quite strong. If you’re after a beard oil and either prefers or wants a scent that lingers all day, this is a pretty good one.

Shaving while traveling

In my experience there are two kind of travel.. the kind where you stay (and shave) in a hotel, and the kind where you’re happy to have time and water to shave with…

My kit don’t changes too much between the two, and the only real difference is the razor. For the former, I have a nice vintage Gillette khaki set from 1918, for the later I have a Merkur 985CL open comb travel razor. They are both nice razors, but I would feel quite bad if my Khaki went missing or broke.

As for the rest… a travel sized aftershave, a shavestick, a travel brush, some beard oil, alum and blades. Everything you need for a moment of zen away from home.

New haul

Brutalt Bra Limited Edition for the Shave Nook – Norwegian Wood, spruce scent. Smells like the woodshed do after you split all of the winters firewood… I like it a lot, and I haven’t even shaved with it yet.

Also a NOS Schick “Lady Eversharp” Injector razor, almost direct from the back room of a Greek store. Not just for the ladies, it’s my first injector. Came with two NOS blades, but I might keep those and just use new blades with it.
