Review of Wilkinson Sword Classic DE Razor

A recent result of my RAD, the Wilkinson Sword Classic (WSC) is in one regard in a class of it’s own; It’s the only DE razor I’ve tried so far that feels very much like a cartridge razor in use – apart from giving me a superior shave, that is.

I suspect it’s due to the materials and design of the razor; moulded thermoplastic with a metal rod inserted in the handle gives a very tail-heavy balance – unlike pretty much every other razor I’ve own. The difference in balance means I have had to adjust my grip slightly to get a good shave out of the WSC; however it should also mean that someone coming straight from using a cart should more easily adapt to using the WSC and get to enjoy the pleasures of DE shaving with little or no fuss.

The WSC is a decent razor – not the mildest, nor the most aggressive in my rotation. The construction is sturdy, and the fact that the cap covers the ends of the blade is a nice touch. The head is a little on the big side though; if you shave under your nose it might give a little bit of trouble – the obvious solution is off course to grow a manly moustache. One downside I’ve noticed – apart from the big head – is that the head quickly clogs up with lather, much quicker than other DE-razors. It don’t mean all that much, but it is somewhat distracting to rinse the razor twice as often as I’m accustomed to.

Overall I can recommend the WSC as a good first razor for those interested in trying out a DE, or as a decent razor for travelling. For those of us with incurable RAD, it is a cheap addition to our collection.

Shave of the day 29th October

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Soap, liquid Peppermint
Lather: Lea Shave stick
Brush: Body Shop Synthetic
Razors: Merkur 985CL with a fresh Lord Platinum, and Cadet TTO-13 with a fresh Wilkinson Sword
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, travel sized alum stick and Krampert’s Finest Bay Rum

Sort of on the go, with an extended Go Kit. First shave with the Cadet TTO, and a nice one at that. A DFS all told.

Shave of the day 26th October

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Liquid Peppermint
Lather: Dalan d’Men Energic cream
Brush: New Turkish No6
Razors: Wilkinson Sword Classic, with a Wilkinson Sword blade (3)
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, Alum block and Kramperts Finest Bay Rum

Still busy with my new gear – todays cream was nicely mentholated. A DFS all around, as usual.

Shave of the day 24th October

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Liquid Peppermint
Lather: GzD shave stick
Brush: New Turkish No6
Razors: Wilkinson Sword Classic, with a Wilkinson Sword blade (2)
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, Alum block and Kramperts Finest Bay Rum

Still breaking in the new gear. The ‘new’ No6 is breaking in quickly, and the GzD made a wonderful lather. A DFS all told.

Shave of the day 22nd October

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Liquid Lavender
Lather: Derby Lavender Cream
Brush: New Turkish No6
Razors: Wilkinson Sword Classic, with a fresh Wilkinson Sword blade
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, Alum block and Kramperts Finest Bay Rum

An “all new” shave; the cream, brush and razor all arrived last week. A DFS, even if the brush needs a bit of breaking in.

Feeding my ADs

Acquisition Disorders is something many traditional wetshavers seems to gain as part of their hobby – probably because there is just so many brushes, razors and soaps out there to try.

My main AD seems to be centred on soaps and creams, which admittedly is cheaper than razors and brushes.. still, I surprise myself at times. Yesterday I went ahead and ordered a replacement Turkish No6 – having PIFed my original one away – and a order for a 2.45$ brush ended up at just over 20$;
– Wilkinson Sword Classic razor w/ extra blades
– A cheap Plastic Safety razor; if nothing else it’ll be good for laughts
– Dalan d’Men shaving cream
– Derby shaving cream
– Tweex shaving stick
and
– Tuskish No6 shaving brush.

Shave of the day 7th September

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Magic Soap, liquid Lavender
Lather: Mike’s Pine & Cedarwood Soap
Brush: Omega ’48 boar brush
Razors: Cated TP-01 with a Wilkinson Sword
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, alum block and Krampert’s Finest Bay Rum

Felt like some more subtle scents at the end of the week – and it made for a nice, relaxing DFS.

Shave of the day 5th September

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Magic Soap, liquid peppermint
Lather: Mama Bear’s Awakening
Brush: Semogue TSN 2012 LE badger-boar brush
Razors: Cated TP-01 with a Wilkinson Sword
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, alum block and Krampert’s Finest Prototype Menthol

A very refreshing DFS – both the soap and the aftershave packs a punch, in the best possible way.

Shave of the day 3rd September

Pre-shave: Pure glycerine soap
Lather: Lea shavestick
Brush: Vie-Long 14033
Razors: Cated TP-01 with a fresh Wilkinson Sword
Post-shave: Cold water rinse, alum block and Body Shop “Maca Root Energic Face Protector”

Razor, shave stick and pocket sized alum from Shave A Buck – the balm was a free sample  from Body Shop.
Overall a fine shave –  I can see why people have been praising the Cadet OC head sky high.
