Stay moist shave…

…with a used blade and cold water. Sounds good, apart from the danger of soap poisoning…

Shaving in trenches and foxholes

Shave of the day 5th April – and five years of blogging about wetshaving

Pre-shave: Dr Bronners Eucalyptus Soap
Lather: Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood
Brush: Turkish No6
Razor: Parker 22R TTO with a Green Astra
Post-shave: Cool water rinse, alum, and Myrsol Agua Balsamic
Beard care: Scotch Porter Beard Balm and Big Red No7 Beard Comb

As a sidenote;

I started my wetshaving weblog five years ago today, with a post about my first DE razor and which ones I though y’all might enjoy as your first razor… reading it now makes me wonder if I had any idea what I was doing. Not that I have a clear idea of what I’m doing now, mind you.

Five years of blogging about wetshaving five times a week adds up to 1298 posts and 50K hits or so… it’s been a fun and educational, it also takes time and effort – and I fully intend to keep it up. There is a certain charm to dig up old patents to write about, as well as trawling the internet for other shave related things to share with y’all.

The start of military shaving

September 30, 331 b.c. was the beginning of the smooth shaved military man. According to the ancient historian Plutarch, Alexander the Great – sometimes referred to as the greatest military mind of the ancient world – ordered his men to shave so the Persians couldn’t grab them by the beard and kill them.

Or perhaps he just liked the look of a clean shaven man… we only have a single source as to the logic behind the decision, but we know that shaving suddenly became common among the Greek at the time.

The Darwin DE reimagined

Phil, over at BullGoose Shaving Supples, have come up with a solution for those who wants a Darwin DE and have deep pockets: the stainless steel Asylum Evolution DE.

It looks really, really nice, and the reports from the ones who have used the prototypes are very encouraging. And while I haven’t rushed to place an order myself, the price isn’t bad for a new production stainless razor… and my birthday is coming up in a few months *ponder*

Wright’s Coal Tar Shaving Soap

…the ideal shaving soap for soldiers – at least according to an advertisement in the book “Knowledge for War; every Officer’s handbook for the front” fourth edition published 1916.

As an aside; Wright’s Coal Tar Soap can still be bought, which isn’t bad for a product that first hit the shelves in 1860 – even if todays product (made in Turkey) no longer contains coal tar. Don’t think they make shaving soap any more though.

Look, feel, be sharp!
